# Fury v AJ Gets A Step Closer With Surreal Press Conference Completed

The Great British Box Off has been has been a talking point for fans for well over a decade now and for so long it seemed that a true ring encounter between [Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/articles/cme8x7rey9dlo) was just not going to happen, as both are quickly heading towards retirement and the hanging up of their gloves.

The feuding, the public fighting (and a couple of false starts) finally seemed to come to fruition in the last few weeks as contracts were signed and details were hammered out, and then typically Fury went off on a rant about wanting to fight Joshua’s now trainer Oleksandr Usyk instead. Then Dana White and Eddie Hearn got their own handbags out and all seemed lost once again. Until this week’s news conference got off the ground – and it was not what anyone expected.

It definitely was not what those who use [bitcoin sportsbook UK](https://betpandacasino.io/en/sportsbook/) were expecting as they now more seriously weighed up the odds. There were some genuine pleasantries, some random jokes, talk of going for a pint and some aimed, but light hearted and self depreciating, banter. The whole thing was a thoroughly British affair, only missing some ‘tutting’ – maybe a cup of tea, a saucer and a plate of biscuits. The long awaited, and much wanted bout – albeit, neither former World Heavyweight Champion is now at their prime best with the advance of age – at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on December 11, now actually looks like it will really happen.

There will be those who are already hyped up on the fervour and the excitement of this clash, but the sad truth is that whilst few can doubt it will not be an entertaining, hard fought and unpredictable affair, the simple sad truth is that the press conference in many ways betrayed the reality of the situation. They will now meet way too many years too late in the day, for the eventual winner to have any meaningful bragging rights.

The BBC’s Kal Sajad put it perfectly when saying ‘…more like two veterans in the closing stages of long, turbulent careers taking stock of how far they had both come.’

There was no real edge, there was no real anger or arrogance (or even the fake ‘high on sugar’ attitude that we see all to often because it looks good in five second clips on social media) … it was just polite. A joke about a glass jaw, looking like a blancmanage, going to the pub for a pint, sparring stories, acknowledging the debates they have caused between friends and family down the years and despite some uncertainty still in the air, how it was a nice opportunity to actually have it take place in Great Britain to square those circles.

We even saw Joshua pretend to tickle Fury’s stomach as they staged the obligatory face off. Not really the media spectacle, or the mood, that anyone had been expecting given the words and rants that had been exchanged in the many years it has taken us to even get to this point.

It was more surreal than seeing a pathetic slap or an ear being bitten off. But amongst the surreal nature of the press conference, and the disappointment that it has come so late in the day, [Fury](https://boxing-social.com/) was certainly right about one thing – it will be the ‘icing on the cake of two great careers’ and it will definitely live up that, if nothing else.
