Ryan Garcia Back Tracks After Announcing Fight: “I Was Lied To”

Super-lightweight contender Ryan Garcia has indicated that he was lied to by Golden Boy Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya, hence a previous announcement that declared he would be fighting Rolando Romero.

Romero-Garcia seemed set to be announced just days ago, with Garcia revealing that he would challenge for world honours for the first time on April 20th.

However, in a shocking twist, it was revealed Romero that would instead make a first defence of his WBA title against Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, just hours after Garcia’s announcement.

This was the latest instalment in the ongoing public saga and fall-out between Garcia and De La Hoya, which stemmed from Garcia’s decision to turn down a clash with Devin Haney, after meeting up with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

On social media, Garcia held his hands up and declared that he will wait until contracts are officially signed before announcing any future fights, but maintained that he still expects to take part in a major pay-per-view event on DAZN.

“Look, I was informed that the deal was finalizing and it would be announced in the coming days.

Obviously, that was a lie.

My patience has been tested the last few weeks. I’m trying my best to be as honest and real as I can to you guys.

I’ll be looking forward to announcing my next fight. I’m not going to say anything until it’s actually signed and delivered, I still look forward to putting on a big PPV for DAZN Boxing. Have a blessed day.”

With Haney yet to announce an opponent, revisiting that proposal appears to be the obvious choice for Garcia if he were to headline a pay-per-view worthy card.

Although, it remains to be seen if he will stick to the rumoured advice of Mayweather and steer clear of a match-up with the WBC title-holder.
