Ryan Garcia has announced that he is going ‘a different route’ after publicly beginning negotiations to fight Devin Haney.
The 25-year-old bounced back from his first career loss to Gervonta Davis last year by officially moving up to super-lightweight and stopping Oscar Duarte.
Back to winning ways, he called out Devin Haney, who has also recently made the jump up, vacating his undisputed lightweight status to win a 140lbs belt from Regis Prograis in a shutout.
Both men had confirmed that talks were underway, but Garcia has now taken to social media to call out WBA Champion Rolando Romero, demanding his promoter Oscar De La Hoya make it happen.
“I’ve notified my team I’m going a different route. My intent now is to fight Rolando Romero. I pray my team backs me on this decision. Oscar make this fight happen. THAT’S THE MOVE. BIGGER FIGHT, BIGGER BUSINESS.”
Although any bout with Ryan Garcia has a good price attached, ‘Rolly’ has a mandatory defence that will be against either Ohara Davies or Ismael Barroso, depending on which man comes out on top tonight in their Interim title bout.
It’s unclear whether or not Garcia made the decision purely for the fight or if negotiations couldn’t come to a suitable deal.
