In light of the events over the weekend, George Groves has now asked whether Tyson Fury’s performance against Francis Ngannou was ‘the worst in history.’
This past weekend saw Ngannou, the former UFC champion turned boxing novice, get brutally knocked out in the second round of his fight with Anthony Joshua, a former two-time world heavyweight champion.
The chilling knockout came after two equally heavy knockdowns and left many people wondering how safe it was for Ngannou to have ever been in the ring with an experienced professional boxer having had no real boxing experience himself.
Part of the reason the likeable but over-matched French-Cammeroonian got in the ring with Joshua was because just a few months ago back in October he stunned the world in his boxing debut when he took on the WBC and lineal world heavyweight champion Fury.
Ngannou did better than anyone could have possible imagined, not only did he knock Fury down in the third, but many feel he was unlucky to lose on points after the full 10 rounds.
However many feel his loss this weekend has rather put things back into a more realistic perspective and has left Groves wondering on his own George Groves Boxing Club podcast just what Fury was doing.
A clip on the podcast shared on X has him asking the question.
“Was Fury’s performance against Ngannou the worst performance in history? For a lineal world champion who is apparently the best in the division, who should have lost that night but he got the decision against a no-bout cage fighter, is that the worst performance in history?”
Fury himself has admitted it was an off night for him, as have certain members of his team.
