George Kambosos Jr. has fought a hard 24 rounds against Devin Haney and ultimately ended up with a pair of unanimous decision losses, and is now saying his victor is the best lightweight in the game.
Speaking to BoxingScene.com, the Greek-Australian explains why he thinks 24-year-old Haney would beat the current WBA super lightweight title holder Gervonta Davis.
“Devin Haney has the belts. He’s proven. He’s got everything.
Yeah, [Davis] has beaten some good guys. But he hasn’t beaten the guys that Haney has beaten.
We’ve seen a rehydration clause on Tank’s biggest win against Ryan Garcia. So those kinds of things stain [a resume] from the outside looking in.
Haney is the No. 1 lightweight at this stage until he vacates.”
Kambosos Jr was the one-time WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and The Ring lightweight title holder back in 2021 after a marquee win against Teófimo López.
His next fight was in June 2022 on home soil in Melbourne when he lost to Haney after struggling to make weight. He also lost the rematch later that year and is now set to return to the ring against Brit Maxi Hughs on July 22 in an IBF title eliminator.
Since those impressive back-to-back wins, Haney has gone on to retain all four of the lightweight belts in a successful defencee against Vasyl Lomachenko in May which he won by unanimous decision – although many thought the Ukrainian had done enough to get his hand raised.
Davis’ most recent outing was a high-profile pay-per-view against Ryan Garcia that Tank ended with a body shot in round seven and led him to declare he was “the face of boxing.”
As such, Haney And Tank remains one of the most intriguing possible fights to be made in any division with both boxers very much in their prime.
