Following his second consecutive loss to Devin Haney, the former Lightweight Champion is facing lawsuits on the business side of boxing.
It’s claimed by manager Peter Khan and trainer Javiel Centeno that they are owed money from George Kambosos Jr, whom they say has breached contract terms by not paying up. The lawsuits were filed three days before the Aussie fighter lost his rematch with Haney, putting a full stop on his short reign as undisputed champion.
Carl Berry, the lawyer representing both Khan and Centeno, summed up the case against Kambosos.
“Prior to Peter’s involvement, Kambosos only fought in Australia, so he basically contacted Peter because [Kambosos] wanted to get out of Australia and for Peter to help make him into a star and build a brand, which is what Kambosos became.”
“The progression of George’s career speaks for itself. The work Peter has done speaks for itself. There is a clip out there before their second fight of Haney confronting Kambosos about not paying Peter. Then, there is Bill Haney confronting Kambosos about the work Peter does for him after the first fight. Peter just wants to be paid what he’s supposed to be paid. The same thing with Javiel.”
“It’s the same situation with Javiel, because he shorts Javiel the money after he beats Teofimo Lopez, and then he shorted him again for George’s first fight with Haney. Quite honestly, I’ve seen guys shorted before, but this is a little more than what I normally see.”
It’s reported that Kambosos owes Khan $347,700 and Centeno $280,000. The lawsuit states that the fighter cut ties with his former manager on October 3rd, less than two weeks before his second fight with Haney. At the time of writing, George Kambosos has not responded publicly.
