WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis has faced criticism for his résumé as of late, but he may well have found a willing dance-partner in Keyshawn Davis – who continues to pursue an all-American showdown. Yet, ‘Tank’s’ long-term trainer believes that the former Olympian has an ulterior motive.
Keyshawn Davis turned professional off the back of a stellar amateur career, picking up silver medals at the Pan American Games, World Championships and 2020 Olympics, losing out to much-lauded amateur sensation Andy Cruz in each of those finals.
However, since making the switch to the pro ranks, Davis has been a threat to go one step further and become a lightweight world champion, knocking out two former world title-holders in Anthony Yigit and Jose Pedraza during an unbeaten start to life with the big boys.
Last week, ahead of a scrap against Gustavo Lemos, ‘The Businessman’ repeatedly demanded a clash with Gervonta Davis and made headlines during the build-up after ‘Tank’ responded to his call-outs.
Come fight night, the 25-year-old delivered a career-best performance to halt Lemos within two rounds, leading fans to believe that an event strangely named Davis-Davis could take place during 2025, once the champion gets past Lamont Roach.
Yet, Kenny Ellis, who coaches Gervonta Davis, has now taken to social media to reveal his belief that Keyshawn is only beckoning a fight with the champion in fears of facing his old amateur rival, Andy Cruz, who has also risen into world title contention.

“Even when he loses against Gervonta Davis, Keyshawn knows it will be his biggest payday.
“So, he is trying to stir everybody away from talking about him fighting Andy Cruz, because he knows Andy Cruz will blow his shot at Gervonta Davis, just like he blew his shot at the Olympic Gold.
“The casual fan don’t know what’s really going on, I hope people of Norfolk, VA ain’t falling for that trickery.
“I’m sure the real men of Norfolk want Keyshawn to get that smoke back.”
Like ‘Tank’, Andy Cruz is expected to return to the ring in January, as he closes in on a world title shot despite having just four contests to his name.
