The self-proclaimed ‘face of boxing’, Gervonta Davis, has revealed who he’s backing to come out on top in next Tuesday’s hotly-anticipated unified super-bantamweight title contest between Stephen Fulton and Naoya Inoue.
After starting his career as a light-flyweight, Inoue has worked his way through the divisions, becoming a three-weight champion and some fans’ pick for the greatest pound-for-pound fighter on the planet.
After claiming all four belts at bantamweight at the end of last year, ‘The Monster’ immediately moved up to the 122lb division in search of a world title at a fourth weight-class.
With no ‘tune-up’ bouts undergone, the Japanese phenomenon will jump into the super-bantamweight scene at the deep end, taking on WBC and WBO world champion, Stephen Fulton.
Fulton, who like his opponent is undefeated, seemed set to move up to the featherweight division, but decided to stick around and take on one of the boxing’s most feared punchers. He will have the natural size and reach advantage in the fight, yet is the slight underdog, despite being the current best super-bantamweight in the world.
In an interview with Fighter IQ, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis looked forward to the showdown, admitting that he plans on flying to Japan and witnessing the spectacle at ringside, after declaring his backing for Fulton.
“I like erm, what’s the guy from Japan? [Inoue]. Yeah, and I like Fulton too, so I definitely want to go to that fight, for sure, and it’s in Japan too, right? That’s fire, I’ve got to go there.
I’ve got to back Fulton, got to back him. He’s a guy from near the [my] area, he’s a neighbour, you know what I mean. I’ve got to back him.”
Stephen Fulton will take on Naoya Inoue on away territory, with the fight taking place in Tokyo, Japan, on Tuesday July 25.
