Gervonta Davis is often your favourite fighter’s favourite fighter – and he takes any praise from big names and turns it into motivation.
Undefeated in 28 fights and with 26 knockouts, ‘Tank’ Davis is regarded by many fans as one of the most exciting fighters in the world, and the pros have just as much praise for him.
Heavyweight great, Mike Tyson, has picked out the Baltimore fighter as a ‘future legend’ of the sport, and current undisputed super middleweight champion, Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, has named him as one of his favourites to watch.
Davis accepted the praise from Tyson and Canelo, and told ES News that now he had to live up to it.
“I gotta live up to it. I feel as though they see I’m good, you know I’m great, I just gotta prove it. When I hear stuff like that, rooting for me, I feel as though I gotta work hard to live up to their expectations.”
Rumours are that ‘Tank’ has performed well against heavyweights in sparring before, but he wasn’t sure about getting in the ring with Tyson. He smiled and said it would be behind closed doors if it happened.
“Spar Mike? There can’t be no recording or nothing, just incase.”
Davis returns to action against undefeated rival, Ryan Garcia, on April 22 in Las Vegas. The first press conference for what could be the biggest fight of 2023 will take place this week.
Set at a catchweight of 136lb, the pick ’em fight represents a welcome change in boxing – two young stars in their prime stepping over promotional and broadcast barriers to give the fans what they want.
