American lightweight duo Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson are arguably the two top talents at 135lbs and now the pair have gone back-and-forth on social media seemingly teeing up what could be a possible unification bout down the line.
‘Tank’ Davis was upgraded from WBA Regular champion to full WBA lightweight champion following Devin Haney’s decision to vacate his undisputed title and move up to 140lbs.
Although, Davis has not stepped through the ropes in almost a year now and many believe that he could following Haney’s footsteps and make the jump to super-lightweight after his proposed showdown with Frank Martin.
Meanwhile, Stevenson became a three-division champion when he outpointed Edwin De Los Santos for the vacant WBC title back in November, in a heavily criticised performance.
To win back the fans, it seems as though Stevenson needs a big name on his record and ‘Tank’ could prove to be the perfect option for the Olympic silver medallist.
In an exchange on social media, Davis admitted that he plans to face Stevenson at some point, but insinuated that his fellow champion may have to wait his turn.
SS – “We can shoot the fade whenever you [are] ready gangsta, I [have] been dying for the opportunity.
GD – “You gonna get hit with a hook and run the whole fight like you did buddy. The same hook that I caught you with in sparring. That fake s**t don’t work with me, [I don’t] give a f*** who you are with, you [are] a b****.
SS – “Anything but fight. Yeah ok lil bro.”
GD – “I have a 6/7 fight deal. You in there LIL BRO.”
Davis is expected to fight Frank Martin on June 22nd in the maiden defence of his WBA crown, whilst Stevenson is linked with a return to the ring on July 6th for the first defence of his WBC belt against an unnamed opponent.
