Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez promises war and Fight of the Year clash against David Benavidez

Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez is set to put his WBA and WBO unified cruiserweight belt on the line against dangerous David Benavidez on May 2 at T-Mobile Arena. The bout is already one of the biggest fights of the year, but its timing adds even greater significance.

Taking place close to the Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas, the bout has a unique atmosphere. The matchup between two fighters with Mexican roots, set against one of boxing’s most iconic weekends, only adds to the scale and spectacle of the event.

Ahead of the bout, Ramirez has raised expectations for his clash with promising fans, calling it an all-out war and suggesting it could be a contender for Fight of the Year.

In his recent appearance on FightHype, Ramirez made it clear that entertainment and intensity will be guaranteed when they step into the ring.

“Don’t miss the fight May 2nd… it will be fireworks,” Ramirez said. “I mean it [will] be a war. It [will] be a war, I promise you. And I think it’d be a fight of the year.”

Gilberto Ramirez expects aggressive fight against David Benavidez

In the above-mentioned interview, Ramirez suggested the fight may not go the distance, highlighting his intent to push the pace.

“I don’t know if this fight is going the distance,” Ramirez said. “But I’ll try to hurt him and try to win this fight. Whatever it takes.”

The Mexican champion acknowledged Benavidez’s form and momentum but remained confident in his own preparation.

Ramirez also revealed that the two fighters have shared the ring before, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the contest.

“I’ve seen all of his fights because I like boxing and I watch big fights,” Ramirez said. “He did a pretty good job; he’s been doing well.”

He pointed to their previous sparring sessions as a key reference point.

“The day we trained together, we knew that this time would come. Those sparring sessions were pay-per-view.”

Ramirez believes the fight will now give both men the chance to showcase their full abilities on a major stage.

“Now is the right time and the right moment to put everything that we did and show the people real boxing.”

Ramirez vs Benavidez records

Benavidez enters the contest as a two-weight world champion, bringing notable victories over Caleb Plant, Demetrius Andrade, and David Morrell. He holds a perfect professional record of 31 victories, out of which 25 came via victories.

On the other hand, Ramirez has built his career by moving through multiple divisions and now appears fully settled at cruiserweight. He has 48 wins to his name and just one loss that came in 2022 against Dmitrii Bivol.

As promised by ‘Zurdo’, if both fighters deliver on their aggressive intentions, the clash has all the ingredients to live up to the hype and potentially earn Fight of the Year recognition.
