A spanner was thrown into the works on Friday which could see the biggest fight in boxing fall through.
The fight in question, of course, being Gennady Golovkin’s highly anticipated rematch with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
The aforementioned spanner in the works came in the form of The Nevada State Athletic Commission making the move to temporarily suspend the Mexican pending a hearing which will take place on April 10th.

Canelo has been bombarded with a lot of negative press since it was revealed that ‘Canelo’ failed two tests on February 17 and February 20th. Both tests confirmed that Canelo showed elevated levels of Clenbuterol.
There are now many questions arising as to what could happen moving forward.
Different opponents such as Billy Joe Saunders have been mooted as potential alternatives.
Golovkin and his camp, however, believe that whatever happens ‘GGG’ will absolutely take to the squared circle on May 5th to defend his unified WBC, WBA, IBF and IBO world middleweight titles.
“It’s hard to predict what the commission is going to do. But Gennady said he definitely wants to fight on May 5th;” Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler told boxingscene.com.
Loeffler added that their fighter is currently hard at work in training camp, in full-blown preparation mode for May 5th.
“He’s in full training camp, he just started his sparring.”
“He’s getting ready one way or the other to fight May 5th.”
“Hopefully, everything works out;” Loeffler added.
Providing an update on the commission’s dealings with Canelo, the commission said that all their requests have thus far been complied with by the Mexican 2-weight world champion.
“Naturally the commission has to do their due diligence. My understanding is from what they said, ‘Canelo’ has complied with everything, all their requests they’ve made of him.
They’ve done multiple tests since those tests in Mexico.”
Lastly, Loeffler did add that he is still hopeful that this whole situation proves to be just a hiccup and both ‘Canelo’ and ‘GGG’ will face off on Cinco De Mayo weekend.
“Hopefully everything will work out and we’ll see a great fight on Cinco De Mayo,”
