Former world super-middleweight champion George Groves says Chris Eubank Jr wouldn’t beat Gennadiy Golovkin if the Brit was to secure a fight with the Kazakh star.
Groves, now retired from the sport, was in Cardiff on Saturday night to take in the Eubank Jr v Liam Williams grudge match and was left unimpressed with his old rival’s win in the Welshman’s back yard.
Eubank Jr proved too much for Williams at the weekend giving him his fifth consecutive win since losing to Groves in a World Boxing Super Series semi-final four years ago.
“I think if Golovkin was in there tonight with Williams he would have stopped him early,” Groves told Boxing Social’s Andi Purewal.
“He [Golovkin] wouldn’t be messing around. He’s never out of position, he’s always marching his guy down in a great position to punch. Tonight, he would have been a nightmare for Eubank because Eubank never had his feet under him properly.
“Golovkin, even at the age of 39, his best days are definitely behind him, but I can’t see how Eubank would beat even a 39-year-old Golovkin off the back of tonight’s performance. I’ve got a lot of time for Eubank, I appreciate him, I’ve seen a lot better from him and I hope whatever he’s trying to put together now he can. Get the right fights, we’ll see.”
