With less than a week to go until the biggest domestic rematch this year, David Haye has shared new information regarding his training for the second bout against Tony Bellew.
In an article for the Daily Mirror, Haye went into detail about one area where he was lacking last year – hand-eye coordination.
“One thing we have worked on in particular is my hand-eye coordination.
“It was terrible last year and I couldn’t figure out why, but it was because I hadn’t been working on it, so that’s something we’ve corrected – use it or lose it! My timing was completely out and although it’s a cliche, maybe everything does happen for a reason.
“If I’d caught Tony in the first round and knocked him out, perhaps I wouldn’t have changed anything and assumed my preparation would be fine to face a top-10 heavyweight. It wouldn’t have been!” wrote Haye.
Haye has also brought back his former strength and conditioning coach Ruben Tabares and ‘The Hayemaker’ claims he is now better than ever.
“When I fought Nikolai Valuev for the heavyweight world title in 2009, I had to be athletic for 12 rounds; I couldn’t rely on knocking him out quickly. It was thanks to Ruben that I was able to do that and I need to be in the same shape this time. I expect to be more powerful than I’ve ever been before; I’ve kept my training records from throughout my career so I can confidently say I’m stronger and fitter than I’ve ever been,” added the former world heavyweight champion.
Haye will face ‘The Bomber’ in the ring this Saturday at the O2 Arena in London. Fight week will start today with a press conference in Liverpool and Bellew already sent a message on social media to Haye, who certainly has an action-packed history in regards to press conferences.
Right we have the presser later this afternoon! Remember now David to behave yourself! We don’t need any of this lad…. 😳 pic.twitter.com/SlXuMWGD0C
