Promoter Eddie Hearn says WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo has done nothing to warrant a fight with Mexican star Canelo Alvarez.
TGB Promotions’ Tom Brown, who represents Jermall Charlo and Errol Spence, recently revealed to BoxingScene that PBC offered Canelo a $45m guarantee to fight Charlo, with a $55m guarantee to fight Spence at 164lbs if he was victorious.
Canelo instead signed to take on WBA light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol on DAZN, which is set to take place in Las Vegas this weekend.
“Who has Charlo ever fought?” Hearn told Boxing Social’s Andi Purewal. “No notable victories. I think he’s a decent fighter, but when is Charlo going to fight anyone? He has not done anything to warrant a fight with Canelo Alvarez.
“That fight would be a voluntary defence of Canelo’s 168lbs title. What title can Canelo take from Charlo? I repeat – who has Charlo ever beaten to warrant a fight with Canelo Alvarez.
“Errol Spence at 164… Canelo is never fighting below 168 again. He likes going in there and taking titles off people. Look at his run. This is what Canelo does. He likes to make history.
“Worried about fighting Charlo at middleweight who has never beaten anyone? These people get very soppy, because they signed a one fight deal, beat their champion and came back.”
