Matchroom Promoter, Eddie Hearn, has made his prediction ahead of the undisputed lightweight title bout between Devin Haney and Vasily Lomachenko scheduled to take place next month.
Hearn promoted Haney until recently, but the fighter signed a deal with Top Rank for his chance to become the first undisputed lightweight champion of the four-belt era.
‘The Dream’ was successful in his attempt, defeating George Kambosos Jr in Australia in a historic clash and then defeating the Aussie in his own backyard again in the rematch.
He now faces his second defence – one of the most decorated amateurs in the history of the sport, Lomachenko.
In an interview with ID Boxing, Hearn revealed his high expectations of Haney and his belief that he will comfortably dispatch of the Ukrainian three-division world champion, who held an outstanding record of 396-1 before turning pro.
“Yes I do [think he beats Lomachenko]. I think he wins nearly every round. I see Lomachenko has a faded fighter, I’ve always believed that Devin could beat him. We were trying to get that fight three years ago, when ‘Loma’ was more in his prime, so I believe that he wins that comfortably.”
“Lomachenko will be looking to reclaim the belts that he lost to Teofimo Lopez in 2020, in what was his second defeat in the professional ranks, in addition to the WBC and IBF titles. However, his fights since his defeat, against Masayoshi Nakatanki, Richard Commey and Jamaine Ortiz have hardly blown fans away.”
Nevertheless, the match-up appears to comfortably be Haney’s toughest fight to date and will be a true test of his legitimacy as the best 135lber on the planet.
