Although Jermell Charlo has a well deserved reputation as a knockout artist at his usual home of super welterweight, many are questioning whether his power will carry up to super middle when he takes on Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on September 30.
Charlo will hope to cement his name in boxing history forever when he makes the two division jump next month, and the consensus is he will give away almost every physical advantage at the T-Mobile Arena against the Mexican icon.
However, if there’s one man who knows a thing about power, it’s former heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder – and he doesn’t see things that way.
Wilder told ES News that he believes ‘Iron Man’ actually possesses more pop than Alvarez, however he can’t split the pair as a far as a prediction goes.
“They’re two great fighters and two aggressive guys; Charlo may be a little more aggressive than Canelo.”
“I think Canelo throws combinations better than Charlo, but I think Charlo has more power.”
“That’s my opinion on things and how I assess it. As far as who’s going to win? I could see it a decision and I could see it going both ways!”
The bookmakers have Charlo an underdog going into the fight, though some in the sport believe he could have got the four weight world champion at just the right time.
Whatever the case, the contest is without doubt one of the highlights of the boxing calendar for this year and is one not to be missed.
