As the clock ticks down to the official announcement of the Matchroom versus Queensberry card, there is one British heavyweight who is waiting on the call to be a late inclusion and re-announce himself as a title contender in the sports’ glamour division.
Joe Joyce seemed poised for a shot at heavyweight gold until back-to-back stoppage defeats to Zhilei Zhang scuppered his plans and cast him aside.
‘The Juggernaut’ bounced back with a knockout of his own last month, in an unconvincing win against Kash Ali, but the promotional showdown on the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol undercard on June 1st could prove to be the perfect opportunity to prove that he still has enough in the task to be considered a threat to the throne.
Joyce revealed his ambitions to fight on the Matchroom vs. Queensberry card in Saudi Arabia, and also called out a previous world title challenger for a domestic dust-up.
“I’d love the chance to fight in Saudi Arabia if and when it is presented to me as it seems to be the place to fight at the moment. It’s where it seems to be happening now and I want to get in that heavyweight mix so it would be a great opportunity.
“I would also like to fight Dillian Whyte. That would be a massive fight too, and it’s a fight people want to see. Styles make fights and I think our styles would gel well and it would be an entertaining fight for the fans.”
Joyce also appears to be eyeing up a fight with Derek Chisora, but with two heavyweight bouts on the bill, there is every chance that Joyce’s name could be confirmed when the Matchroom and Queensberry announcement is made on April 15th.
