February 11 1990 is forever etched into boxing history as the night that Buster Douglas caused arguably the biggest upset the sport has ever seen by beating Mike Tyson – but does the man himself see something similar happening when Francis Ngannou makes his professional boxing debut against WBC champion Tyson Fury?
Tyson was the undefeated and undisputed heavyweight champion of the world going into the fight with Douglas but was having plenty of troubles outside of the ring at the time.
He was still expected to win the fight – billed as ‘Tyson is Back’ – but Douglas dominated with his jab and right hand.
The 42-to-1 betting underdog was put down with an uppercut in the 8th round after controlling the contest.
He regained composure and almost stopped Tyson in the following chapter before capitalising on his success and knocking the champ down and out for the first time in his career in the 10th, ultimately securing a legendary win.
Speaking to ES News, Douglas was asked what he thought was the second biggest upset win in heavyweight boxing following his own and he opted for the historic night in 2019 at Madison Square Garden when Andy Ruiz Jr beat Joshua.
Then he was asked who was going to win between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou when the pair comes to blows on October 28 in Riyadh – a result in the MMA man’s favour undoubtedly taking over as the biggest shock in the sport.
Unfortunately for Ngannou, Douglas simply doesn’t see it happening.
“Fury, cause he’s a good boxer, I like his style, good boxer, he works off that jab.”
Should Fury come through his polarising next bout, pleny of suitors are waiting for their shot.
