An American heavyweight contender is not happy at having been removed from the WBA rankings and claims it is ‘unbelievable.’
Rankings can often be a hot topic for debate as boxers move in and out, up and down the Top 10. Their position in them often has quite an impact on what matchups can be made and whether or not they can get a shot at the world title.
Promoters can also play a huge role in bumping their fighters up the rankings depending on how well they lobby each governing body, while Francis Ngannou got the world talking when he was put in the WBC’s Top 10 despite having had only one fight, and a loss at that.
In the latest WBA Top 10 one man to have been left out is Michael Hunter, who has previously sparred Anthony Joshua. He took to X to post a message expressing his shock.
“It’s unbelievable how the WBA disregarded my eliminator against Hughie Fury and simply removed me.”
Hunter has fought just once since December 2021 when he knocked out Miguel Cubos in Mexico in September. Although currently frustratingly inactive, he has previously clocked up good wins over the likes of Jerry Forrest and Aleksandr Ustinov.
He also most famously got the better of Martin Bakole when he knocked him out in the 10th and final round of their fight back in October 2018.
If Hunter wants to get back in the rankings, he will need to get more active.
