British heavyweight contender Hughie Fury made a successful return to action at the weekend and already has his sights set on making 2024 a memorable year, revealing plans for activity as well as one outstanding target for the near future.
Fury had been out of action for two-and-half years up until the weekend, a prolonged battle with long-Covid stunting his progress in the division and forcing him to pull out of two fights with Michael ‘The Bounty’ Hunter.
However, the 29-year-old finally stepped through the ropes on Saturday night in Rotherham, where he was tasked with tough Ukrainian, Konstiantyn Dovbyshenko, who famously knocked out Matty Harris last year in an upset win.
Yet, there were no such signs in South-Yorkshire, as Fury comfortably boxed his way to a 59-56 points win to get back to winning ways and extend his professional record to 27-3.
In an interview with iFL TV, Hughie Fury declared his aim of fighting in Saudi Arabia and also to fight on four occasions this year – a feat which he has not accomplished since 2015.
“I am itching to get involved, that [Saudi] is where I believe that I belong and I am on my way there.
“Activity [is the plan]. If I can be out every couple of weeks, that is the plan, hopefully I will get four fights in this year.”
Fury has previously called for a showdown with Anthony Joshua, but with ‘AJ’ eyeing up the undisputed title it seems as though any such pursuit would be a lost cause.
Instead, Fury will face a quick turnaround as he travels to Cardiff for a second bout of the year in just three weeks’ time, fighting an unnamed opponent on the Jessica McCaskill vs. Lauren Price card.
