Billy Joe Saunders told fans that his surgery was a success following the injuries he sustained against Canelo Alvarez on Saturday in Dallas.
Saunders trainer Mark Tibbs waved off the challenge of his charge at the AT&T Stadium when the fighter returned to his stool at the end of round eight. A powerful uppercut landed by the Mexican during the eighth stanza hit the right eye of Saunders who in turn told his trainer that he couldn’t see out of the eye after the round was over.
Although he lost his WBO super middleweight title to Alvarez, Saunders left the ring to be assessed in his changing and was soon taken to hospital in an ambulance.
It was revealed by his promoter Eddie Hearn that Saunders suffered multiple fractures to the orbital area.
“Broken eye socket and broken cheekbone in three places,” said Saunders on his Facebook page detailing the extent of the trauma.
“Operation all went well. You win some and you lose some. Didn’t feel out of my league but got caught with a good shot and couldn’t see and Ben [Davison] got the corner to pull it.
“Thank you to all who watched. I’ll be back. God bless you all.”
