After the move away from Showtime, PBC have partnered up with Amazon Prime to broadcast their events, marking 2024 as a monumental turning point for Al Haymon and one of boxing’s biggest promotions. Since then, PBC have put together two major events and are set for a third Amazon fight night this weekend, but now there are rumours of a first non PPV bill that will take place in the summer.
Tim Tszyu was expected to take on Keith Thurman in March atop a phenomenal bill for PBC’s debut show with Amazon, until Thurman was forced to withdraw from the contest due to an injury and was replaced by Sebastian Fundora. With the aid of a sizeable cut, ‘The Towering Inferno’ was able to pull off one of the upsets of the year and claim both the WBC and WBO super-welterweight titles.
Just over two months later, Canelo Alvarez faced fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia in a showdown for the undisputed super-middleweight titles. Although Alvarez was unable to get the stoppage, the pound-for-pound superstar looked much improved from his four outings previous and gave a boxing lesson to his countryman, who had not been defeated in his 43 bouts up until that point.
This weekend, in arguably the greatest card of the year from PBC thus far, Gervonta Davis ends a 14-month spell of inactivity to make a first defence of his WBA lightweight title against undefeated Frank Martin in an all-American affair. That comes after the light-heavyweight debut of David Benavidez, who fights former world champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC interim title.
Also on that card, Gary Antuanne Russell and Alberto Puello put their unbeaten records on the line in a clash for the WBC interim super-lightweight title, with a shot at Devin Haney’s full title looming for the winner. Finally, Carlos Adames will defend his WBC middleweight title for the first time against Terrell Gausha, following the WBC’s decision to strip Jermall Charlo of the belt – who had not defended the strap since 2021.
After three blockbuster cards on Amazon pay-per-view, esteemed boxing journalist Dan Rafael has now reported that PBC are planning a first non-PPV event of the year, featuring two former world champions.
“Per source involved in event, the 1st PBC on Prime Video non-PPV event is in the works for either August 10th or August 17th. Card supposed to include Caleb Plant and Stephen Fulton. No opponents yet that I am aware of.”
The return of Stephen Fulton would likely see him debut in the featherweight division, following his decision to move up to 126lbs after a first career defeat against Naoya Inoue last July.
Meanwhile, Caleb Plant has been away from the ring for 15 months and will be hoping to bounce back from a gruelling loss to David Benavidez last year and prove that he is still a top player in the super-middleweight division, particularly now that both Benavidez and David Morrell have moved up to 175lbs.
