Bozy Ennis, father and trainer to welterweight star Jaron, has confirmed to Boxing Social that his son’s next fight will be an IBF welterweight final eliminator and looks set to be against Custio Clayton.
Ring TV first reported the story stating news had reached them of “Boots” plans. Tonight (Friday, January 21) Mr Ennis replied with “Yessir” when asked if his highly rated star’s next fight would be an eliminator, which could be before the Spring. Then asked if it would be against the most available contender Custio Clayton (ranked 5 with the IBF), Bozy said “most likely”.
The 24-year-old from Philadelphia has lit up the welterweight scene with some of his boxing and performances of late. Unbeaten in all of his 28 starts Ennis is perceived by many to be ready to make the step up to world title level.
In the current IBF rankings, scheduled to be updated next month, the number one and two positions are vacant with Ennis next at number 3. At 4 is Vergil Ortiz Jr who fights Britain’s Michael McKinson on March 19. Clayton comes next in the top 10. The Canadian is unbeaten in 20 starts with one draw on his record. The blip came against Sergey Lipinets in an IBF Interim title fight in October 2020. The Russian, a former IBF super-lightweight champion, would fight Ennis six months later and be dispatched of in six rounds.
Errol Spence Jr, the IBF and WBC champion, will defend his two welterweight titles against WBA holder Yordenis Ugas in the coming months. Ennis or Clayton now has the chance to get their hands on the winner and fight in their first world title bout.
