Jarrell Miller’s next fight could be the world title shot plenty assumed had passed him by. Eddie Hearn has confirmed Matchroom are in active negotiations to send the 38-year-old heavyweight in against WBA champion Murat Gassiev.
Hearn revealed the talks while running through a heavyweight division suddenly rich with belts and options. Miller, who recently signed with Matchroom, has been handed a direct route back to contention — no long string of eliminators required, just a champion he is positioned to face.
“There’s a little bit of confusion with the WBA. I mean, Gassiev’s the champion. He’s got to fight Jarrell Miller, our guy, which we’re negotiating at the moment.”
That was Eddie Hearn told iFL TV, as reported by Boxing News 24. It would be a remarkable late-career turn for Miller, whose most infamous near-miss was his ill-fated 2019 shot at Anthony Joshua, a bout scrapped after he failed multiple pre-fight drug tests. He has since rebuilt, leaning on the size, pressure and work rate that still make him an awkward night for anyone.
What’s next for Jarrell Miller?
Gassiev, the former unified cruiserweight champion, brings serious power but a heavyweight run slowed by health issues and long layoffs. Hearn is already looking beyond it. “Hopefully Jarrell Miller can beat Gassiev. We can do Miller against Kabayel. There’s loads of fights to be made,” he said. Nothing is signed yet — Miller first needs the Gassiev negotiation over the line before any of it becomes real.
