Former WBO bantamweight world champion Jason Moloney continues up the path toward claiming a second world title following a unanimous-decision victory against Andre Donovan today in Brisbane, Australia.
Moloney (29-4, 20 KOs) handed Donovan (12-3, 8 KOs) his first defeat in 12 fights in his first bout abroad. The Ohio native appeared to fancy his chancing of his hand raised when the judges’ scorecards were announced. However, three scores of 97-92 earned Moloney his second straight victory in the headline contest broadcast live on Stan TV in Australia and on UFC Fight Pass around other parts of the world.
“Jason went 10 hard rounds with a tough durable and game opponent who came to give all he can,” Moloney’s manager, Tony Tolj, said exclusively to Boxing Social moments after the fight. “I’m happy Jason got 10 solid rounds under his belt.”
The 35-year-old Australian, who has been accustomed to fighting on the road, picked up the IBF intercontinental and WBC Australasian bantamweight titles in his second fight with promoter Tasman Fighters. Moloney was ranked in seventh place by the WBC, ninth place by the IBF and in tenth position by the WBO ahead of his success in Brisbane. He will move up in at least two of those three governing bodies in the next month.
