Jermall Charlo has claimed he has not yet signed his next fight and that there ‘ain’t no confirmation’ about whether or not it will be against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
The rumour mill has been in overdrive this week with many sources reporting that the famous Cinco de Mayo fight date for Canelo this year will see the undisputed super middleweight champion take on Jermall Charlo on May 4 in Las Vegas.
This bout offers Charlo a chance for redemption following his twin brother Jermell Charlo’s defeat to Canelo in September 2023, where Canelo secured a decisive victory on points, dropping Jermell in the seventh round.
Canelo’s current streak includes wins over Dmitry Bivol, Gennady Golovkin, and John Ryder since May 2022. Jermall’s recent victory over Jose Benavidez Jr. in November marks his return after securing the WBC middleweight title in 2019, defending it three times.
Charlo has now responded in a post on Instagram.
“I haven’t even talked to Al Haymon since I last fought. So everybody that keeps talking about, ‘You’re about to fight Canelo,’ – ain’t no confirmation. You gotta chill out.”
If it happens, this upcoming fight will be Jermall’s first above the 160lb limit, so whether this denial is a negotiation tactic from Charlo or a hard truth, we shall have to wait and see.
