Jermall Charlo has named the date that he claims will be when he faces undisputed super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
The unbeaten WBC middleweight titlist has previously taken time out to deny that he was set to face ‘Canelo’ back in February when the Mexican was still in the process of working out who he would be fighting on his traditional Cinco De Mayo date. That transpired to be Jamie Munguia who he takes on this coming weekend in a big all Mexican clash in Las Vegas.
Charlo whose record is 33-0 with 22 knockouts has been involved in all sorts of fight rumours having ended a 29-month ring hiatus with a ten-round decision win over Jose Benavidez Jr. last November 25 at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.
That comeback fight happened above the middleweight limit but he still maintains his title belt even though he hasn’t fought at middleweight since a June 2021 points win over Juan Macias Montiel at Toyota Center in his hometown of Houston, Texas. A year later in the same place, he was due to make a defence of his belt but had to pull out with a hand injury.
Last October, Charlo’s twin brother Jermell stepped into the ring with Canelo but didn’t cover himself in glory with his performance. Alvarez cruised to a one-sided decision to retain all four of his belts and was barely caught with a punch as Jermell boxed safe and stayed on the outside.
Speaking in a video captured by Fight Hype, Jermall claimed he is next in line for Canelo and will be exacting revenge.
“I’ma fight Canelo, I’m going to get my brother’s revenge, in September.”
He was then asked where the fight might take place.
“We don’t know yet.”
Neither Charlo has been hugely active in their careers recently but little has been done by the governing bodies to force their hand. When the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has been asked about this in the past, he hasn’t taken too kindly, so if it is true that Charlo might take on Canelo next, it would represent a good return to the ring.
