Joe Joyce will fight veteran heavyweight Christian Hammer on Saturday night at the OVO Arena, Wembley, London.
Having not fought for 11 months, when he stopped Carlos Takam in six rounds, ‘The Juggernaut’ looked like facing former heavyweight champion Joseph Parker this summer. But since their face-off during the Tyson Fury-Dillian Whyte broadcast on April 23, Parker has signed with promoter Ben Shalom and Boxxer meaning a fight between the two Joe’s looks highly unlikely.
Christian Hammer, 34, has been a pro for 14 years and has been in the ring with the likes of Tyson Fury, Alexander Povetkin and Luis Ortiz. The German has a mixed record with his best wins coming against Erkin Teper, David Price and Michael Wallisch.
Joyce is big favourite to get past the Hammer on Saturday and if he does he’ll be setting his sights on the winner of Usyk vs Joshua on August 20th. However one man could spoil his plans, if Tyson Fury, the current WBC and lineal heavyweight champ decides to come out of “retirement” then a super fight to become the unified heavyweight champion would almost certainly come before Joyce getting his shot.
Also featuring on the undercard is Jason Cunningham who defends his IBF International & Commonwealth super-bantamweight titles against former world champion Zolani Tete. A win for the Doncaster man would see him move one step closer to a world title shot.
