Joe Joyce is talk of the town coming off the back of the toughest test of his career – one which he passed handily – and has now said that people would rather see Tyson Fury fight someone like him instead of rumoured opponent, Mahmoud Charr.
‘The Juggernaut’ has become famous for his ability to take a punch, but on Saturday night the heavyweight also displayed power, accuracy, and an incredible engine. If the rest of his division weren’t worrying about him before, they certainly should be now – and Joyce’s name is already coming up in big fight discussions.
Perhaps the biggest name in the division is set to be fighting on December 3. Catching up with SecondsOut, Joyce was asked if Tyson Fury’s rumoured bout with Charr in December was a good match up.
“It’ll be a good fight while it lasts, but I think people don’t want to see that. They want to see Fury in better fights like Usyk, or Joshua, or me. There’s plenty of other fights out there.”
Fury made headlines this week by calling off negotiations with Anthony Joshua as ‘AJ’ missed a deadline to sign the fight contract. Joshua’s team are adamant that the deal would be made once their lawyers had looked over everything, but that did nothing to persuade ‘The Gypsy King’ to grant an extension. Instead, he seems to have moved on to a fight with Mahmoud Charr – a man who has fought twice in the last five years.
At 37, Joyce perhaps doesn’t have the luxury to consider easier outings or warm up fights. He has a single goal – to become World Champion – and he’s making his way towards it like it’s one of his opponents in the ring.
If he wants to do that soon, it’ll have to be Oleksandr Usyk or Fury he faces. Should he wait for the pair to potentially unify the belts for a final time, it sounds like he doesn’t plan on taking his foot off the gas in terms of opponents.
