The father of the WBC heavyweight Champion of the World has had his say on his son facing Anthony Joshua – and, if he’s right, it’s not good news for fans.
As the deadline looms for Anthony Joshua to sign a contract to face Tyson Fury on December 3, John Fury has claimed that ‘AJ’ is scared. Speaking to TalkSPORT at the Joe Joyce – Joseph Parker fight this past weekend, Fury cast doubt on the all-British heavyweight fight.
“Anthony Joshua is terrified of Tyson Fury. Joshua will never fight him. He hasn’t got the ***** to fight him – neither has Usyk. They’re all running scared mate. It’ll never happen and I said it first.”
A potential fight with Fury and Oleksandr Usyk stumbled when the Ukrainian said he wanted it next year in response to ‘The Gypsy King’s December demand. Last week, Usyk released an interview in which he called Fury afraid. As back and forths go, this one won’t be going down in the trash talking hall of fame.
The elder Fury’s thoughts on Joshua are in direct contrast to social media posts from the man himself, who yesterday said he was ‘of course’ going to sign the contract, but that it was currently with his legal team to go through the finer details.
Fans are once again being let in behind the scenes of negotiations that have many hopeful, but others believing that they have been doomed from the start. Tyson Fury has issued the opposite team a deadline of today to sign the contract, with Eddie Hearn responding to say that, whilst they were working on it, the date was unrealistic.
Whether or not this stand off will result in a showdown in the ring remains to be seen, but more on that should follow in the next few days.
