# John Ryder Targeting Huge Rematch If He Can Beat Jaime Munguia

Super-Middleweight contender John Ryder has revealed his intentions of securing a high-profile rematch if he can upset the odds and become the first man to defeat 42-0 Jaime Munguia on Saturday night.

Ryder controversially lost a unanimous-decision to fellow Brit, Callum Smith, back in 2019 in what was his first attempt at winning a world title. However, ‘The Gorilla’ bounced back with notable wins over Daniel Jacobs and Zach Parker to earn himself a shot at one of the biggest names in the sport, Canelo Alvarez, and the undisputed super-middleweight crown.

[Although he lost a wide decision to Canelo in Mexico](https://wp.boxing-social.com/news/canelo-john-ryder-result-and-report/), Ryder’s performance earned him the respect of fans worldwide as he displayed his heart and grit to survive twelve rounds against the pound-for-pound great.

As a result, he has landed yet another major clash, this time taking on the undefeated former super-welterweight champion, Munguia, and is eyeing up a rematch with Alvarez if he can pull off the upset, Boxing Scene reports.

> “I kind of somewhat came away as a winner. It’s done my career a world of good in the aspect that I’m still aligned for big fights. That’s why I’m here,”
>
> “I’m definitely looking for the Canelo rematch. The biggest and best fight possible for me. I have to win this time \[if given the opportunity for a rematch against Alvarez\]. Not to get my nose broken, and to go in there and put on a show and take his belts.”
>
> “I wish I would have had that Canelo fight 10 years ago. I’m here now. The fire still burns deep.”

Munguia-Ryder takes place on Saturday January 27 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, live on DAZN, [topping an undercard that features two world title contests.](https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/boxing/news/jaime-munguia-vs-john-ryder-undercard-fights-boxing/9a91cc88f6cbb6e5357bb6c8)
