Josh Warrington has successfully defended his IBF featherweight championship with a unanimous decision victory over Carl Frampton.
Upsetting the odds once again and staking his claim as Britain’s fighter of the year, the Leeds Warrior dominated throughout the early proceedings with his industry and tenacity, overwhelming the Jackal with flurries of activity as the Ulsterman attempted to establish a comfortable range and maintain his composure.
Warrington invariably had the upper-hand whenever the two fighters engaged, showcasing his considerable strength on the inside to overpower Frampton and sensationally staggering the champion in the opening round with a flush right-hand shot.
Frampton was consistently frustrated by the champion’s methodical yet spirited approach, as Warrington moved intelligently, throwing series of straight punches before darting in with venomous combinations.
Showcasing clever and economical shot selection, the Jackal enjoyed sporadic success in some of the more competitive later rounds as Warrington inevitably struggled to sustain the furious pace set from the opening bell, but ultimately failed to mount a sufficient offensive to significantly alter the course of the fight.
On the other hand, Frampton struggled to put any dent whatsoever in the stubborn Warrington, who by this point was looking like the more assured and stronger of the pair as the contest approached it’s conclusion.
With somewhat uncharitable score tallies of 116-112 twice and 116-113 that bely the utterly one-sided nature of the affair, Warrington extends his perfect record to 22-0 and unquestionably consolidates his position as a force to be reckoned with in the featherweight division.
