Vasiliy Lomachenko’s promoter Bob Arum says his “first-choice” opponent for the Ukrainian is lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr.
Lomachenko got back to winning ways in 2021 following the loss of his three world titles to Teofimo Lopez in October 2020. The grand master picked up victories against Masayoshi Nakatani and Richard Commey as he continues on a path to regain his belts.
In the first defence of his titles Lopez would come unstuck against Australia’s Kambosos and lose via split decision in New York after an edge of the seat encounter. Kambosos now has options for his first fight as WBA, IBF and WBO champion. Devin Haney, the WBC champion, appears to be the front-runner but Arum is plotting a way to ensure Lomachenko gets the opportunity.
“We are talking to the Kambosos Jr people about Loma going to Australia, which Loma is prepared to do,” the Top Rank boss told Sky Sports.
“It would be a huge fight in Australia. But we have a Covid-19 problem to clear, which I think we can do.
“This fight against Kambosos Jr in Australia, is my first-choice for Loma.”
Kambosos and Haney had some verbal sparring on Twitter recently with the champion claiming he had a stadium ready for a fight. The ‘Ferocious’ 28-year-old has made it clear that he would love his first fight since beating Lopez to be something of a homecoming at an outdoor stadium. It appears now it is a race between Haney and Lomachenko as to who will be in the opposite corner first.
