He may be only three months away from his 90th birthday, but legendary promoter Don King has lost none of his old fire.
The veteran promoter is attempting to block Christopher Lovejoy’s WBA title fight with ‘Champion In Recess’ Manuel Charr in Cologne tonight.
King believes he has an exclusive promotional agreement with Lovejoy and that neither the Las Vegas-based heavy or the German promoters of tonight’s bout are adhering to a ‘Cease & Desist’ letter sent on behalf of King several weeks okay.
In a counter move, Lovejoy filed for bankruptcy in California before departing for Germany, but true to old form King isn’t letting go.
“Lovejoy and the German promoter are defying the law,” claimed King. “We have served them and justice will prevail. We will see who will be “quacking” when we get to court and the legal process decides that everything is there in black and white.
“Lovejoy is out there popping off and feels that this fight is for the WBA championship. The WBA hasn’t sanctioned this illegal bout and they certainly won’t do so. Trevor Bryan [another King fighter] is the WBA champion.”
“What fighter shows up in Germany without a trainer or cut man and is totally out of shape, weighing 306 pounds. Lovejoy lacks plain common sense. See you in court along with your German promoter! We’ll see who will be laughing last on Instagram.”
But Lovejoy (19-0, 19 KOs) is firmly standing his ground. “Today we silence the critics!! It ain’t even about the money,” tweeted Lovejoy on Saturday morning. “I already got paid yesterday; this is for Donald Duck aka Pookie, send some more letters, man. You look dumb af doin’ that. The boxing world wants to laugh at you some more.”
Lovejoy-Charr is still scheduled to take place tonight though that may change as the situation develops during the day.
