British, Commonwealth and European bantamweight champion Lee McGregor has signed a multi-fight co-promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing.
The undefeated 24-year-old Scot’s career is now in the hands of co-promoters Probellum and Eddie Hearn. McGregor’s Matchroom debut takes place on December 18 in Manchester when he makes the second defence of his title against Armenia’s Narek Abgaryan on the Joseph Parker-Dereck Chisora 2 card.
McGregor, one of British boxing’s brightest talents won the European crown in spectacular fashion with a first-round win against Karim Guerfi in March. The Edinburgh fighter defended his title successfully against Vincent Legrand in Belfast three months ago.
His collection of belts begun when he won the Commonwealth belt in June 2019 against Scott Allan before beating Kash Farooq in an enthralling encounter to win the British title five months later.
“I’m absolutely delighted to be getting back in the ring defending my European Title against Narek Abgaryan,” said McGregor. “This is another step closer to me becoming a world champion. I have the best team possible, and I believe with Probellum and Matchroom backing me, I can win world titles at multiple weights.”
McGregor v Abgaryan replaces what was a highly anticipated light-heavyweight clash between Joshua Buatsi and Maxim Vlasov. Buatsi suffered a hand injury training and hopes to be back in the New Year.
McGregor now joins Kash Farooq under the Matchroom banner which increases the opportunity of a rematch between the two.
“We look forward to watching Lee McGregor perform in Manchester on December 18 and then the huge all-Scottish rematch with Kash Farooq in early 2022,” said Eddie Hearn.
