Liam Smith will take on Sam Eggington when he returns to the ring in a few weeks’ time.
The 30-year-old former world champion will be back between the ropes on March 30, exclusively live on Sky Sports in the UK.
Smith, who recently left Frank Warren and inked promotional terms with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing, is set to headline at the M&S Bank Arena against ‘The Savage’ in a clash that will be streamed Stateside on DAZN.
He has been out of the ring since last July’s points defeat against Jaime Munguia when he challenged for his old world title in Las Vegas.
But ‘Beefy’ will be hoping to make a major impression in his first fight for Hearn and Matchroom against a man in Eggington who lost his last outing against Hassan Mwakinyo of Tanzania last September.
Mwakinyo travelled to Birmingham, as part of the supporting cast to Amir Khan’s victory over Samuel Vargas, and stopped Eggington inside two rounds.
“It’s a very good fight for me,” said Smith. “I’ve done a lot – and I mean a lot – of sparring with Sam. You know what you are going to get with him. He comes to fight.
“You aren’t sitting on the edge of your seat wondering what he’s going to bring. You know exactly what he’s bringing. It’s the same with me and you know this is going to gel into a good fight. We will meet in the middle. It’s what we both do.
“I do feel, though, I do everything better than him and beyond. I feel if I ‘turn up’, you will all see what I mean.
“I’ve got to do a proper job on Sam and a proper job is what I truly believe I will do. Everything I throw will hit Sam and I just feel I have too good a variety for him to carry on going.”
Meanwhile, Robbie Davies Jr. will make the first defence of his British super-lightweight crown when he challenges Joe Hughes for the European title, super-welterweight duo Anthony Fowler and Scott Fitzgerald will meet in a highly-anticipated domestic showdown, with the winner targeting British champion Ted Cheeseman, and heavyweight David Price returns to his home city.
Cruiserweight Craig Glover, gym-mates Tom Farrell and Ged Carroll and ‘Miss GB’ Natasha Jonas will also see action on a card that is expected to be graced with more additions in due course.
