After two delays, Liam Smith’s rematch with Chris Eubank Jr is finally on for September 2, and the Liverpudlian isn’t fazed by who is in the opposite coaching corner.
Smith’s comments to Sky Sports Boxing come in the wake of the news that Eubank has split with Roy Jones Jr and enlisted the help of Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre to help train him for the fight.
‘BoMac’ is the long-time coach of Terence Crawford and has also been in the corner for former super-featherweight champion Jamel Herring as well as training Amir Khan last year for his fight with Kell Brook.
McIntyre’s value shot up recently, having helped to oversee ‘Bud’s masterclass against Errol Spence Jr to win all four major welterweight world titles in Las Vegas. It’s a performance being branded by some as the best of a generation in the sport.
Smith, though, is unmoved by the big-name signing, and believes that his foe struggles to listen to any trainer.
“It’s Chris being Chris looking for names. If Crawford didn’t win at the weekend would he still have chosen BoMac? Maybe not. I couldn’t care less who he brings.
Chris could have BoMac, Chris could have Terence Crawford, the best fighter in the world in his corner, I just don’t feel like it helps him. Chris is too egotistical to listen. I don’t feel like it makes a difference.”
The first match ended in the fourth round with a Smith knockout which Eubank has long since protested was aided by an illegal elbow.
