Teofimo Lopez has captured the IBF lightweight championship with a sensational second round stoppage victory over Ghanaian defending champion Richard Commey on the Crawford-Kavaliauskas card last night.
‘The Takeover’ has long been acclaimed as one of boxing’s most prodigious talents and vindicated the hype with a sensational display that belied his pre-fight marginal favourite status, dropping the champion in the second stanza and then subsequently pummelling him into submission.
Lopez looked assured in the early jab exchanges and notably wasn’t phased whatsoever when Commey connected with a trademark straight right hand, stabbing the Accra native with a sharp left jab and consistently alternating his angles of attack.
The Honduran-American then displayed his own offensive firepower coupled with his exquisite timing in the second round; after buckling Commey’s legs with a devastating counter left-hook, he then bowled over a venomous right hand that sent the champion crashing to the canvas.
Never before had Commey appeared to be so vulnerable and the challenger also demonstrated violent finishing instincts, bombarding the hurt champion with a series of ruthless combinations to ultimately force a memorable stoppage victory.
