Two-division world champion and now fight analyst Paulie Malignaggi has weighed-in with his prediction ahead of a proposed match-up between undefeated American duo Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis.
Haney defeated Regis Prograis earlier this month to become the WBC super-lightweight champion and, ever since, he has been linked to a showdown with ‘Tank’ Davis, who claims he will make Haney’s father and trainer Bill cry if they meet in the ring.
In an interview on Pro Box TV, Malignaggi offered his assessment of the rumoured bout, declaring that the styles of each fighter massively favour Haney, especially if he is as composed and flawless as he was against Prograis.
“I said that Haney beats Tank like two years ago, even when everybody was hating on Haney, I said that Haney beats Tank.”
“First of all, Tank throws away constant rounds and lets you outbox him easily, then he waits for you to make a mistake, he tries to lure you in and knocks you out.
“Haney doesn’t make those kind of mistakes, Haney fights in a very athletic style but very safety-first, especially against guys who are going to be punchers like this. He will take what you give him, he will create the simplicity and he will just keep doing that over and over again, he will never fall in for that mistake and he will win constant rounds.”
Further discussing the subject, Malignaggi went on to say.
- “Tank is already pretty comfortable letting the other guy bank rounds and then knocking him out, this way he is going to have a problem, because Haney is not going to make that mistake against Tank. He is not going to walk into any big punch byes, he is not going to let Tank set him up, he is going to continue to outbox him.”
Eddie Hearn has since confirmed Bill Haney’s claims that ‘Tank’ has turned down an offer of twenty-million dollars to take the fight, leaving fans questioning whether the contest will take place.
