Eddie Hearn and Matchroom have secured the signature of undefeated super-middleweight prospect, Edgar Berlanga.
Upon signing the multi-fight deal, the 25-year-old said that his ultimate goal is to fight Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez for the division’s undisputed title.
Upon signing the contract, the WBO NABO champion called out the biggest name of all, in an interview with Matchroom.
“I’m looking for the big fights and I know signing with Matchroom was the right choice to get me to where I want to go.
I’m humbled by this opportunity, and I will dedicate myself into becoming the best 168-pounder in the world. My main goal is to the land the Canelo fight and renew the greatest rivalry in boxing – Mexico vs Puerto Rico.”
After an incredible run of sixteen first-round knockouts in his first sixteen fights, Berlanga, the New Yorker of Puerto Rican heritage, was receiving high praise from fans around the globe and was being predicted to be a major threat to Canelo’s crown.
Slowing down slightly, his four most recent bouts have all gone the distance. Some fans believe that he is lucky to still have his undefeated record, too.
Unanimous decision victories against Marcelo Coceres (30-2-1), Steve Rolls (21-1) and Alexis Angulo (27-2) have all been controversial – and a Mike Tyson-esque ear bite against Angulo only further damaged his reputation.
Ranked as the world #4 with both the WBO and the IBF, Berlanga is still very much a hot prospect and a great signing for the promotional company who are partnered with DAZN and always looking to increase their US output.
With the help of Hearn, ‘The Chosen One’ could find himself challenging for a world title in the next couple of years.
