IBF super-lightweight champion Subriel Matias has officially signed with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing ahead of what is sure to be a pivotal 18 months for the Puerto Rican sensation, and he appears more than ready to make the next step towards superstardom.
Matias extended his record to 20-1 in November when a fifth consecutive opponent retired against ‘El Orgullo de Maternillo’, maintaining his run of knockouts in every win to date.
The lone blemish on his résumé came in 2020 to Petros Ananyan, but was avenged two years later and since then Matias has grown from strength to strength, knocking out Jeremias Ponce and Shohjahon Ergashev in his two world title bouts thus far.
His latest move is sure to act as a catalyst for clashes with his fellow champions and Matias has spoken of his pride in securing the multi-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing.
“I can’t wait to show DAZN, Matchroom, all the big names out there and the world why this deal was made: because I’m the best 140 pounder on the planet. And I’ll show this in front of my people, which makes me immensely happy.
“I promise to keep working hard to give the fans what they are looking for. This is all-out wars until one of the two opponents breaks up. I do not run. It is not my fighting style, and it is not in my DNA.
“This will not change now in any way. Whoever they put in front of me, I will destroy. I will not let you down. To my people in Puerto Rico, I’ll see you soon. And we’ll have a glorious boxing night.”
As he suggests, it appears that Matias’ next fight will be a homecoming in Puerto Rico, fighting in his home country for the first time since 2019, with Australia’s Liam Paro the name being touted for the opposing corner, who is also signed with Matchroom.
