The talk has started building up the “mega fight” that I for one truly hoped would never happen. Yes, the Mayweather v McGregor circus is rolling into town.
Yes, the Mayweather v McGregor circus is rolling into town.
In boxing: terms a “Has -Been v Never Was” a mismatch of epic proportions. Floyd Mayweather takes on the Irish two-weight UFC champion, “The Notorious” Conor McGregor. The bout is scheduled to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on August 26th in what’s been talked about as the richest fight in history.
Maybe so but let’s look at its genuine worth; Mayweather has not boxed for almost 2 years.. a has-been? Yes. He has been undefeated for 21 years as a professional. Has been a World Champion for 19 years. Has been a five-weight world champion. Has been in the ring and defeated Manny Pacquiao, Saul Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez, Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, Zab Judah, Jose Luis Castillo, Diego Corrales to name but a few of the modern day legends that he has handily beaten.
Hence becoming regarded as a genuine contender for the highest accolade of all ” Greatest of all Time”.
McGregor, a two-weight UFC superstar who has helped in bringing UFC into the mainstream and earned a fortune on the way has amazingly trash-talked his way into a fight with Floyd Mayweather. His boxing credentials 0, Zero, nothing! Fights 0, wins, 0. Unbelievable as that may seem, it’s true McGregor has no boxing experience whatsoever, now people will immediately tell me about his incredible prowess in the cage of UFC, where he has still lost 3 contests and I admit he has done incredibly well and my respect

But he will go in against Boxing’s Pound for Pound king under boxing rules, which is something similar to a shark taking on a lion …. on land. McGregor may be a fierce predator but he is completely out of his depth.
Some will say at 40 and with two years out of the ring Floyd can’t be the same, but I’ll remind them Mayweather often fought only once a year and inactivity was never a problem and lesser fighters fought well into their 40’s.
In my humble opinion the only loser in this circus sideshow is the sport we all love so much. When the aggrieved millions who will spend their money are disgusted and disgruntled at what they have witnessed the finger of judgement will be pointed well and truly at BOXING. For Whom the Bell Tolls….
