After his stunning win over Errol Spence Jr on July 29th in Las Vegas, Terence Crawford has been anointed the pound for pound king and widely hailed as a generational fighter.
With that rarified air comes comparisons to the best boxers of years gone by, and a name that has been put beside Crawford’s more than most is that of Floyd Mayweather.
And former Mayweather opponent Shane Mosley explained to The Art Of Dialogue that ‘Bud’ would have caused the self proclaimed TBE all kinds of problems.
“Crawford’s got that same mentality that I’ve got, he’s hungry and he’s going to come after you. Mayweather’s very tricky, but Crawford would go both right handed and left handed, which would be a big problem for Mayweather.
If Mayweather gets hit by Crawford, it might not end well for Mayweather – it might be over. But Mayweather could outbox Crawford, because Crawford has the mindset of trying to knock you out and Mayweather is used to people coming and trying to hit him hard all the time.”
Mosley said Crawford would beat ‘Money’ Mayweather that we saw in the second half of his career, but wasn’t sure how a fight against ‘Pretty Boy’ would play out.
“I would go more with Crawford because he’s stronger, powerful and different punch angles. Crawford beats ‘Money’ Mayweather but Crawford beating ‘Pretty Boy. Meayweather, I don’t know.”
As unfortunately is always the case with these fantasy match ups, the boxing world will simply never be able to know which of the two iconic Americans would have emerged victorious.
Mayweather has said in the past that he’d end his retirement to face Crawford if he toppled Spence, however this seems like it would be a very unwise decision for ‘TBE’ at age 46.
