Doncaster’s former world title challenger Gavin McDonnell will face reigning champion Andoni Gago for the European featherweight title on a Matchroom Boxing Spain Promotion at the Pabellón de la Vall d`Hebron in Barcelona on March 26.
Having fallen short in two world title tilts at 122lbs against Rey Vargas and Daniel Roman, McDonnell is now trying his luck at featherweight, having already won an EBU crown down at super-bantam.
Bilbao’s Gago (24-3-3, 7 KOs) will be making his first defence. He is known in the UK for losing in nine rounds to Lee Selby on the Tony Bellew-David Haye I undercard back in March 2017.
McDonnell will be joined in European title action by Luton’s Kay Prosper (14-1-1, 7 KOs) who will meet Barcelona favourite and current EBU 140lbs champion Sandor Martin (36-2, 13 KOs). Prosper will start a heavy underdog, but it’s a great opportunity for the English champion to gatecrash the world ratings.
Also in action are European 154lbs champion and Ted Cheeseman conqueror Sergio Garcia (33-0, 14 KOs) in non-title action and Bilbao’s former European welterweight king Kerman Lejarraga (31-2, 24 KOs) as he continues his comeback after losing a brace of fights to David Avanesyan.
Matchroom Sport Managing Director Eddie Hearn said: “This is a huge card for Spanish boxing and we can’t wait to return on March 26. As Matchroom Boxing continues its global expansion, Spain remains a big focus for us and this double European title card features some of the country’s strongest talents with two hungry Brits looking to come and rip the titles from them. Don’t miss all the action live on DAZN.”
