Mikaela Mayer has dropped a hint as to who her next opponent will be, and believes her next fight will earn her a clamoured for rematch with Alicyia Baumgardner.
In an interview with Boxing Social, Mayer revealed an offer had initially been made to two time Katie Taylor opponent Delfine Persoon, however the Belgian was unable to accept due to commitments in the Middle East.
However, Mayer was adamant that her second choice opponent will still give her the opportunity to make a statement, both to the fans and old foe Baumgardner.
“I wanted Delfine Persoon and we offered her the fight, but she turned it down. Despite what she said on social media, she said she wasn’t available for February or March and her team said it was because she had a two fight deal in Dubai that they want to fulfil.”
“Maybe they didn’t tell Delphine about the offer – but it was there.”
“So we took the second best option. Everyone told me to earn a rematch, all ‘Bum Bum’s fans told me to earn a rematch. Well this is how I’m going to earn a rematch, that’s what I can say about this next opponent.”
Speculation has been rife amongst fans on social media as to who Mayer’s opponent will be, and there have been reports circulating that Christina Linardatou – the only woman to have defeated Baumgardner – has got the call.
Linaradtou outpointed Baumgardner back in 2018 and would represent the perfect opportunity for Mayer to get one over on her rival.
“The Bomb” was awarded a razor thin split decision over Mayer at the 02 last October to become unified super featherweight world champion, with many observers feeling the fight could have gone the other way.
Although the former Olympian has been relentless in her calls for a rematch, they have fallen on deaf ears, with Baumgardner taking on Elhem Mekhaled at Madison Square Garden next month for a chance to become undisputed at 130lbs.
