Heavyweight legend Mike Tyson has revealed who he believes is currently the best fighter in the world.
Tyson himself was once a monolith in the sport, and was reigning as an undisputed champion in boxing’s most prestigious division at just 21 years old.
In a recent interview with Boxing News, ‘Iron Mike’ talked about how Ali inspired him to become the greatest, and compared it to how he himself went on to inspire current heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, who was named after him.
He branded Fury the current best in the world.
“It’s like he’s called Tyson Fury and now he’s the greatest fighter in the world now.
How does that happen? You don’t even have to know a guy and yet you’re somewhere because of him.”
It should perhaps come as no surprise that Tyson has named a fighter from the division he used to rule as the best in the world, though he has often spoke highly of numerous fighters from the lower weights, such as Gervonta Davis.
Fury is widely viewed as the number one heavyweight on the planet, though fans are still clamouring for an undisputed fight with Oleksandr Usyk to truly establish a top dog and eliminate the need for any debate.
Plans had been afoot for the historic four belt unification to take place in Saudi Arabia this December, however promoter Frank Warren has admitted these are now off the table, though could be revisited for early 2023.
And thus, as has been the case for the entirety of this calendar year, the boxing public is now without a clue as to what the biggest name in the sport’s next move is going to be.
Fury has been on social media teasing of a “game changing” announcement, which many speculate could be a crossover fight with former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou.
