Any possibility of a rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano has gone for the time being.
The Puerto Rican proved she was the ‘Real Deal’ and pushed the Irish superstar all the way during their thriller at Madison Square Garden six weeks ago. Taylor retained her undisputed lightweight crown but having been pushed all the way to win a split decision there is enough justification to warrant a rematch.
“Whether they don’t think they can win the fight or whether they just want to get some confidence or… I dunno… but they don’t want the rematch right now,” Taylor’s promoter Eddie Hearn told The DAZN Boxing Show.
Quoting Serrano’s team he said, ’We don’t want to do that fight in front of 80,000 at Croke Park in Ireland’.
“We reached out to their team, and it was like ‘there’s no (financial) number’. There wasn’t even [a] ‘let’s negotiate, let’s make an offer’. It’s like ‘look. we don’t want to do that rematch right now’.”
“It was surprising,” said Hearn. “I thought that Amanda felt like she won the fight, and she could beat Katie Taylor and obviously they’d be turning down a huge amount of money, but they don’t want to entertain the discussions.”
Former unified welterweight title holder turned UFC star Holly Holm has been named as a potential for opponent for Taylor’s next fight and so too has Cris Cyborg.
The Bellator Women’s Featherweight champion is ready to leave behind the Octagon and purse a career in the squared circle. And the 36-year-old Brazilian would be willing to face Taylor at Croke Park despite no experience in a professional boxing ring.
“I am ready to sit down and talk to Eddie whenever he is ready,” she told The Irish Mirror.
“He has mentioned my name in the media a few times, but for me I am serious about getting into boxing and if he is serious about being my promoter then I would love to talk to him. What he has been able to do for all of women’s boxing, not just Katie Taylor, has really helped elevate the sport.
“I have told my management I am ready to sign a contract.”
