After it was reported that Canelo Alvarez is set to shockingly leave PBC, new details have been released explaining the reasons behind the split.
Alvarez was expected to fight under the PBC banner in May, with fights against the likes of Jermall Charlo, David Benavidez and Terence Crawford all touted.
Talks have broken down though, with the pound-for-pound star set to depart and reportedly head back to fight with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing on DAZN. Mike Coppinger of ESPN has now provided more information on the split with PBC.
“Canelo Alvarez and PBC mutually agreed to part ways, sources told ESPN, with two fights remaining on a three-fight deal signed in June. The pact called for the star boxer to fight Jermall Charlo on May 4. However, Canelo and PBC couldn’t agree to terms.
“Jermall’s twin brother, Jermell, had a lackluster performance vs. Canelo in September, killing any brotherly revenge angle. And Jermall ended a 29-month layoff in November and failed to impress vs. Jose Benavidez Jr., so there was limited demand for Canelo-Charlo.
“Alvarez could now return to DAZN, where fights against Edgar Berlanga and Jaime Munguia are in play for May and September. Of course, the big fights for Canelo remain David Benavidez and Terence Crawford.”
Alvarez has moved across broadcasters in recent years in order to get the fights he requires, having spent the majority of the last few years competing on DAZN, facing the likes of Gennady Golovkin, John Ryder and Dmitry Bivol.
Two fights took place with the PBC when he fought Jermell Charlo and Caleb Plant, but the Mexican now looks set to return to DAZN.
