A day after his son’s fight with Chris Eubank Jr was postponed due to a banned substance in his system, Conor Benn’s father has spoken out in support of his son.
In what was a dark day for British boxing, an event that had captured a mainstream audience was pulled from the schedule following news of a past drug test result of Benn’s containing traces of clomifene – a drug claimed to increase testosterone levels in men.
His fight with Chris Eubank Jr was then prohibited by the British Boxing Board of Control and, despite the promoters best efforts, postponed. The boxing world now waits for more information on the doping test.
Nigel Benn, whose fights with Chris Eubank Sr almost three decades ago planted the seeds for this weekend’s super fight, has taken to Instagram to insist his son is a clean athlete.
“As you know, we’re in total shock. I’ve been with my son for the last ten weeks and the training has just [been] absolutely the best it could ever [have] been. He’s a dedicated trainer. He leaves no stone unturned, and we’ll get to the bottom of this.
I love my son. I know he don’t cut no corners, he just goes straight at it, 100% – but we’ll keep you informed. We’ll let you what the next step is. But, you know, he’s a faithful trainer and he’s a clean athlete. Speak to you all soon. God bless.”

His statement follows one from his son and trainer Tony Sims, all of which say that they plan to get to the bottom of the situation. Fans of Benn will be eager to see what they turn up with as the young fighter’s rise to super stardom hangs in the balance.
As of writing, there is no indication when, or even if, the fight with Eubank Jr will be rescheduled, although all involved have expressed a desire for that to be the case.
